Why develop standards?
Establishing standards ensures consistency, quality assurance, effectiveness, and facilitates evaluation across various intergenerational programs. The Australian Standards introduced in February 2025 outline ten key standards, including promoting reciprocal learning, social cohesion, and preventing age discrimination. These standards also emphasise building sustainable relationships, good program management, evaluation, creating inclusive spaces and a commitment to leadership.
In practice, adhering to these standards is seen as essential for enhancing the advantages of intergenerational practice, and providing a competitive edge for organisations.
The standards were developed by a team of experts, including Jenny Quan, Barbara Langford, Associate Professor Jennifer Cartmel, Angela Jacobson, Magda Dixon and Emeritus Professor Anneke Fitzgerald. The team went through a process of comparing and aligning existing professional standards and frameworks and linking these to “best” intergenerational practice.
For organisations who are seeking certification, the journey towards best practice involves self-assessment, support from AIIP and a commitment to continuous improvement and leadership development. This booklet is a self-directed guide to commence the journey.
This approach to certification aims to ensure that intergenerational initiatives are not only effective but also contribute positively to social cohesion and individual well-being across generations.
