JOY 3: Evaluating Intergenerational Programs
This course is a stand-alone course from JOY 1 and JOY 2 and is designed for intergenerational professionals who are ready to deepen their understanding of program evaluation; what it is, why it matters, and how to do it well.
This course unpacks the tools, theories, and practices of evaluation through an intergenerational lens. With real-world examples, downloadable templates, and reflective activities, participants will gain practical skills to measure impact, demonstrate value, and confidently report outcomes.
JOY 3 will equip you to assess program effectiveness, advocate for sustainability, and contribute to a growing evidence base for intergenerational practice.

Methodology: Interactive, participatory peer- learning environment
Materials: Participant workbook, access to online resources and templates, post-program support if necessary.
Completion Requirement: Must attend both sessions and complete reflection activity.

Joy 3 Assessment and Credentials
No Formal Assessments: Questions throughout the modules are required for self-assessment and reflection.
Completion Requirement: Engage in a reflection activity upon completion.
Submission: Send reflection to education@aiip.com.au.
Certification: Certificate of completion and digital badge credential.
CDP points: At the completion of Joy 3, participants will receive 14 CDP points.
Module Breakdown
Module 3.1: Introduction to Intergenerational Practice Evaluation
Review data collection methods
Define evaluation in the context of intergenerational programs.
Identify the benefits of evaluating intergenerational practice.
Recognise the importance of evaluation for quality assurance, advocacy, and sustainability.
- Understand the perspectives of key stakeholders, including participants, funders, and policymakers.
Module 3.2: Foundations of Evaluation
Recognise how different lenses influence what and how we evaluate
Differentiate between process, outcome, impact, and economic evaluations.
- Explain how program fidelity, sustainability, and context influence evaluation.
Understand the role of economic evaluation in demonstrating value.
Module 3.3: What and How Do We Measure?
Identify key intergenerational outcomes and map them to measurable indicators.
Select and apply validated measurement tools suited to different generations and settings
Design ethical and inclusive data collection processes.
Develop a mixed-methods data collection plan combining surveys, observations, interviews, and reflective techniques.
Module 3.4: Data Analysis and Dissemination
Be aware of the quantitative and qualitative approaches to analysing evaluation data.
Communicate results effectively
Prepare accessible reports and visuals for internal reporting, funding applications, and community dissemination.
Contribute to national evaluation databases through ethical and responsible data sharing.
Module 3.5: Evaluation in Action – Integration, Innovation & Future Pathways
Apply practical strategies to design, strengthen, and sustain evaluation processes in real-world settings.
- Explore innovative and emerging methodologies, including digital tools, participatory methods, and longitudinal tracking over time.
- Understand global perspectives and policy directions that influence the future of intergenerational evaluation.
