The Australian Institute for Intergenerational Practice (AIIP) held its 4th Annual Conference on February 21–22, 2025, at Torrens University Sydney campus in Surry Hills, NSW. The event culminated on Friday with the announcement of the 2025 AIIP Award for Innovation and Contribution, honouring outstanding intergenerational programs that foster community connections.
This year’s prestigious award was presented to the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong’s Cross+Gen program. Launched in 2021, Cross+Gen is a collaborative initiative involving CatholicCare, Catholic Education, and local Catholic parishes. The program pairs high school students with older community members to bridge the digital divide and promote meaningful intergenerational engagement. Since its inception, Cross+Gen has expanded from one school and three parishes to four schools and 15 parishes across the Illawarra, Macarthur, and Shoalhaven regions. Sessions are hosted in schools, with hospitality students often providing refreshments, further enhancing community bonds. Evaluations have shown increased digital confidence among seniors and enhanced leadership and empathy skills in students.
Other finalists for the 2025 AIIP Award included Echoes Montessori in Modbury, South Australia wo received a Highly Commended Award, Crystal Brook Kindergarten also in South Australia, iGen Learning a program in Bendigo Vic, The InterGen Project also in Victoria.
The AIIP Annual Conference serves as a platform for researchers and practitioners to explore the impact of intergenerational connections on building thriving communities. This year’s theme, “Connecting Generations for Life” emphasized the importance of collaboration across generations as a vital part of life.
Bishop Brian Mascord of Wollongong praised the Cross+Gen program, stating, “Cross+Gen is a powerful testament to how intergenerational programs can enrich lives and strengthen relationships. It highlights the vital role of our Pastoral Works in serving and uplifting people across all stages of life.” (insideageing.com.au) The AIIP Award for Innovation and Contribution aims to recognize and encourage programs that make significant strides in intergenerational practice, promoting stronger, more connected communities. A Life Membership was also awarded to Professor Susan Kurrle at the Conference.
